During the Vendee Globe 2008/09, over 5,500 individuals and corporations put their name on the boat giving Derek tons of motivation to race the boat around the world. On Day 50 of the race, Derek’s Open 60 Spirit of Canada was rolled upside down by a wave and two of the spreaders broke leaving Derek with no option but to abandon the race as the mast could not be fixed without assistance.
The goal now is to get those 5,500 names the rest way round the world. We now have almost 6,000 names on the boat with the goal being 10,000 names by the start of the Velux 5 Oceans on October 17, 2010.
Put your name on the boat, offer financial and moral support to Derek as he takes on the world, in what is billed as the hardest, longest race for an individual in any sport. If you already have your name on the hull, please continue to support Canada’s offshore sailing team and receive current items from Spirit of Canada.
